Wine Auctions Boom In Asia
Content as many of us are to buy wine online for the best bargains, wine collectors the world over are reaching into their money sacks and showering each other with thousand dollar bills. Some collectors are gaining (but only at a substantial price), whilst there are those who want to profit from the interest. Proof of the phenomenon comes as Sotheby’s, the international chain of prestigious auction houses, announces atmospheric sales in its wine auctions for 2010. Worldwide, Sotheby’s sold 88 million US dollars worth of wine, setting a personal record.
In the London auction house a whopping 20 million dollars of wine was auctioned off, and a similar 15 million went in New York. But the big gainer this year has been the Hong Kong auction house. In the last year, the Hong Kong branch sold off 52 million US dollars of wine. These figures have obviously been achieved by some particularly large individual sales: this isn’t your supermarket Chardonnay wine , obviously. Among the big purchases this year was the biggest ever made for a standard size bottle of wine: A Chateau Lafite 1869. Two hundred and thirty two thousand US dollars were forked over for this now legendary vintage.
After the abolition of wine duty, Hong Kong has become the wine capital of Asia, with many wealthy Asian collectors swooping to pick up the prestigious wines flowing through their auction houses. The provenance of one collection up for sale in early 2011 will undoubtedly start Sotheby’s off to another impressive year: Andrew Lloyd Webber is auctioning his collection. It is predicted that Lloyd Webber will get as much as 4 million US dollars from the sale. But auctions here and elsewhere are increasingly less about the wine and more about the power statement a collector makes when they hand over a record breaking sum. The most I can hope for in this lifetime is to grab a nice Barolo or another Nebbiolo wine and watch some old horse races to simulate the experience of the auction house chatter.
