Help getting started making a Mosaic piece?
I want to make a mosaic heart or picture frame for my best friends birthday.
I made one for my bf and bought a kit, which was rinky dink. If I want to begin from scratch what are good glass pieces to buy or can I shatter my own glass (china plates, tile?)
Just looking for resources or advice on planning a design and choosing the right glass/tile pieces
Yes, you can break your own glass, tiles or china to use. You need to put what ever material you want to use in a gallon (or larger) FREEZER zip lock bag, sealed, but with a couple of small holes poked in it to let the air out, so that it won’t pop when you begin to hammer on it to bust it up. It is recommended to use a freezer weight bag because it is more durable, and by using a see thru bag you can see how it is breaking. But PLEASE wear eye protection as an added safety measure.
You can just drop the bag, but you will have more control over how it is breaking if you use a ball & ping hammer (or even a carpentry hammer if that is all that you have) Remember you do not want to end up with pulverized glass! For your first rough break, you want to end up with approx. 2″ pieces. Then from there, you can TRY to get them broke into more custom sized pieces with a smaller hammer. But to get pieces even more custom sized, using a pair of glass/tile nippers is the key.
Hopefully there is someone that you can just borrow a pair from for your project. Nippers are a “pliers type” tool that has a sideways flat lipped surface as its top & bottom grippers so that you can nip/snap off the outer edges of your roughly broken piece to get it to fit in better. If you scratch or lightly score your piece with a scratching awe first, right where you want it to break off, you can get a pretty darn precise snap/cut. These also come in handy if you want to nip around a flower or a motif from a piece of china that you want to use intact. When you buy a kit, all of your pieces are already “broken” into usable sizes, and you don’t get to have all of this creative fun!
Another tip is to break up one type of (or color of) material at a time so that you can keep them together in “like” groups when you are in the application process.
When choosing your frame, it is easiest to use a frame that is fairly flat, as opposed to one with rounded edges and corners. (remember, you can cover any old ugly frame that you can find) You can find cheap/ugly frames at Goodwill & thrift stores, …get them while you are out looking for your glass, tile or china stuff to bust up!
Dollar Stores have good frames for this too!
This leads me to the point of what to look for when you are choosing the “bustin up” materials. For the most part, these materials need to be mainly flat as well, (like plates, saucers & platters) as opposed to glass bottles, cups and bowls. Most or the curved edges will probably be to hard to work in with the other flatter pieces.
As far as a fixative, to attach the broken bits and pieces to the frame, you can use caulk, the stuff that you apply around your sink and tub. Or you can use a fast grab, strong bond glue such as E600. But not a wet glue like Elmer’s. And do not use anything that has a “weak hold” like a glue stick.
And as for the grout, you can buy it premixed or in a powder form at home improvement stores. You will even have a color choice this way. I’ve also heard of tinting your grout for a frame project like this with acrylic craft paint.
