Acclaiming One of Spain’s Most Renowned Painters – Diego Velasquez

Of all the world-famous Spanish painters, there is one who stood out during the Golden Age of the country when plenty of painters were also making their marks on the world. One Spanish painter that made a clear mark of them all is Diego Velasquez; he became one of Spain’s highly eminent and most respected painters during his time. He is also an influential man, being friends with King Philip IV and his chief minister as his paintings has been revered by a lot of people as he presented his talent, skills and style in every piece that he makes.
In June 5, 1599 from a family of average class in the town of Seville, Diego Velasquez was born and is the eldest of six children. He began his formal studies of paintings by age eleven under the apprenticeship of master painter Francisco Pacheco, and later became a master painter himself accepting his certification from the painters’ guild only at the age of eighteen and with it he was allowed to work as a professional painter. He then married the daughter of Pacheco and Velasquez made paintings of religious themes and tavern pieces, which is much adored by a lot of people, and with all the earnings he saved, he purchased a good house for them and another house to be rented out.
Diego Velasquez continued with his paintings and made a lot of great paintings that made him well-known throughout the country and in different parts of the world. Upon meeting Marques de Spinola, he made one of his reknowned pieces named Surrender of Breda which presents the victory of Spinola; when Spinola saw the painting he was in awe of Velasquez’ talent and how brilliant he was as a painter, extraordinarily capturing emotion through the realism in his portraits. Another painting that Velasquez made was the Las Meninas or The Maids in Honour; it is known to be a great masterpiece of all time and regarded as the most viewed painting around the world.
