Top Tips For DIY Pizza Oven Installation
A quality DIY oven kit will contain all the necessary ‘ingredients’ for you to install your own wood fired pizza oven at home.
All you need is some basic handyman skills, a few tools and an “oven kit’ that’s made from high quality materials that have been designed to be put goether with ease and simplicity.

Getting Started
First you need to select a space for your wood fired pizza oven.A clear space, unencumbered by overhanging branches and out of the way of any items that could be vulnerable to damage by heat, is the best place to situate the oven.
It’s important to dig the foundations to several feet to ensure that the base of the oven can’t be warped or damaged by frost.
Laying the Foundation
Your wood fired pizza oven’s foundation can be made from most common building materials.The standard material is concrete but there are many other alternatives that you can use to give your oven its own unique look and character such as adobe, cob, mortar or rocks as well as using a combination of materials. The only thing you need to bear in mind is to keep the structure durable and able to withstand heat.
Pouring the Slab
The hearth slab should be stabilised during curing with a wire framework.If you intend, as you should, to have an ash trap, remember to leave an opening for the ashes to drop through.
Building the Hearth
The hearth (oven floor) is made using the refractory firebricks supplied with the wood fired pizza oven D-I-Y kit.These bricks create an extremely tough floor which can absorb the very high heat levels in the oven.
Make sure to do a mock up of the hearth layout using a paper and pen. This will make for accurate measurements for matching to your hearth slab.
Placing the Vault
The dome is layered to provide for maximum heat retention. The layers consist of a fire brick or refractory dome covered by ceramic fibre insulation, then alfoil followed by chicken wire and finally the rendering.
Using a prefabricated dome mean a simpler installation process as there is no need to build a brick dome. Simply lay on the refractory dome.They are also superior at retaining heat when compared to standard bricked fire domes.
Letting it Rest
Generally you should leave the oven to settle and dry out for one week before using it to cook.
Then it’s time to fire up your oven and your culinary imagination, get your hands dirty (with pizza dough) and you (and your guests) will be in pizza heaven.
